In recent years, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of Indian students opting to pursue their education abroad, especially following the disruptions caused by the pandemic. According to a report, the year 2022 witnessed nearly 750,000 Indians studying overseas, a significant surge from 450,000 in 2017 and 260,000 in 2020. This trend is not limited to major cities, as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India are also observing a growing aspiration among students to seek higher education abroad.
Various factors such as rankings, location, scholarships, affordability, and the presence of Indian communities have distinct influences on students’ decision-making processes, varying based on their geographical locations and personal preferences. In Tier One cities, rankings, location, and scholarships carry significant weight. Southern cities prioritize reputation and rankings, while Western cities emphasize affordability, peer recommendations, and the availability of a sizable Indian population.
Diwakar Chandiok, Vice President (Recruitment) for South Asia at INTO University Partnerships, highlights three crucial factors that students should consider when selecting their study options:
- PROGRAMME CONTENT: The range of courses available for studying abroad is vast and offers opportunities for research and skill-based training. Students should prioritize their educational requirements and interests when choosing a university. While institutional reputation holds importance, it should not overshadow the alignment of the program with the student’s career goals.
- AVAILABILITY OF SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships play a pivotal role in making studying abroad more accessible and feasible by removing financial barriers. Undergraduate scholarships offered by universities typically range from USD 5,000 to USD 40,000. They significantly strengthen academic and professional aspirations.
- PROGRAMME COST: The cost of higher education is a significant consideration for students contemplating studying abroad. Tuition costs vary among institutions, while living expenses, travel expenses, and insurance costs differ across countries and locations. Students must explore options that align with their budget to ensure a positive and successful overseas experience.
In addition to these key factors, students also consider the post-education prospects available in the country they choose and the ranking of the university they are interested in attending. Peer groups can also exert influence on a student’s university decision.
